It was a tragic situation on Calgary roads after two people lost their lives in connection with a pair of crashes on Monday night.

Police say the crashes happened within an hour of each other.

The first was at Peigan and Barlow Trail S.E. at about 5 p.m.

Police say that a 2005 Dodge Neon, driven by a 44-year-old woman, was southbound on Barlow Trail when she failed to stop for the red light and crashed into a westbound 2002 Ford F-250 pick up truck.

The woman was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition and pronounced dead a short time later.

No one in the truck was injured.

The second crash involved a pedestrian who was struck while crossing 64 Ave. near Falconridge Blvd. N.E.

They say the woman was not crossing in a marked crosswalk when she was hit at about 6 p.m.

Police say in a release that she was thrown several metres as a result of the impact and she received significant head injuries as a result.

She died later at Foothills Hospital during surgery.

No one in the Honda Civic was hurt.

Police continue to investigate, but expect that no charges will be laid in either crash.
