The Calgary Police Service's second Violent Crime Suppression Team made a number of arrests on their first weekend patrolling bars on 17th Avenue SW.

On Saturday around 11:15 p.m., one of the team members on foot patrol saw a vehicle with three occupants police say are known to be involved in the drug trade driving down 17th Avenue SW.

Police stopped the vehicle on 17th Avenue near 2nd Street SW. When officers approached the vehicle they say they smelled marijuana coming out of the open windows and sunroof. A police search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of cocaine, scales, cash and a loaded handgun.

19-year-old Edmond Cole, 23-year-old Frederick Harrison, and 21-year-old Okpoti Koney, all from Calgary, have all been charged with:

  • possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking
  • possession of property obtained by crime
  • careless transportation of a firearm
  • possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace
  • unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • knowingly having possession of a restricted weapon
  • unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle
  • possession of a restricted weapon with ammunition

Koney is also charged with breach of a prohibition order and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order.
