A Calgary based Christian group is launching a website that identifies convicted pedophiles in an effort to protect children from predators.

Canada Family Action launched the new website on Tuesday.

The group's site provides the names and photos, when possible, of convicted sex offenders.

Some of the offenders are still in prison and others have recently been released into the community.

Family Action says the public has a right to know who and where these offenders are so they can protect their children.

"We felt that this would help people, a little bit, with being more at ease about who is in their community and what is going on. But also it raises community awareness a bit more to say we know now that this is a crime that's going on more than we thought it was. We better start looking around the community and watching our kids," said Brian Rushfeldt of Canada Family Action.

The website denounces vigilantism and Calgary police say they don't anticipate any problems with it.

"There is no evidence to suggest that a website like this has caused any vigilantism or any evidence of any attacks against persons or people on the site. We do not anticipate any issues," said CPS Supt. Kevan Stuart.

Canada has a sex offender registry, but the government does not allow the public to access it.

Stoppedophiles.ca lists about 40 child sex offenders Canada-wide and about 10 are in Alberta.
