An animal welfare group is voicing their displeasure over Alberta’s choice to allow a controversial petting zoo near Three Hills to stay open.

Sustainable Resources announced that it was decommissioning GuZoo back in June 2011.

Instead, the ministry has allowed the petting zoo to remain open, but under the supervision of wildlife officers.

The zoo’s permit was reportedly reinstated this week after the province says that the operator followed the rules and no animals were ever found in distress.

Zoocheck Canada, an animal rights group says it is appalled by the decision to keep the zoo open.

The organization has long wanted the zoo shut down.
