Another US retailer has moved into Calgary and the first Marshalls store opened its doors in the Kingsland Village Shopping Centre on Thursday.

Calgary customers were lined up for the Grand Opening and ribbon cutting at 9:00 a.m. at the store on Macleod Trail S.E.

The off-price retailer offers brand-name apparel and home fashions at discount prices and has also opened stores in B.C., Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec.

The company is planning on opening 33 stores across the country and officials say they are excited to join the Calgary market.

“We know that Calgarians are style conscious and value conscious and that they are going to absolutely love the value proposition that Marshalls is going to be able to offer them,” said Theresa Quick, spokesperson for Marshalls.

The company buys in bulk to reduce costs and gets its items from 14,000 vendors in 60 different countries so products can differ from store to store.

“Calgarians are going to be able to find all the brands that they know and recognize in store for a fraction of what they pay in department and specialty stores,” said Quick.

Marhsalls says they are confident they can thrive here despite attempts by other American retailers to succeed in the Canadian market.

“Marshalls offers a unique shopping experience for Calgarians,” said Quick. “They’re going to be able to find absolutely amazing value and I think that’s exactly what the Calgarian shopper is looking for right now.”

The Calgary store has 31,000 square feet of space and Marshalls says shoppers will see new deals every week.
