Animal and Bylaw Services officers have now laid charges against the owner of a pit bull that bit a 61-year-old man at a home in the northeast Calgary community of Monterey Park.

At around 7:30 p.m., officers attended a home in the community where it was reported that a man had sustained a serious injury after he was bitten by a pit bull.

He was taken to hospital shortly after the incident by EMS.

Doug Anderson, operations coordinator at ABS, says that it is always the owner’s responsibility to keep their pets under control when someone visits their home.

“Whether for personal or work reasons, pet owners need to ensure their pets are under control at all times,” he said in a release. “All dog owners are responsible for not only the safety of their dog, but the safety of those who come into contact with their dog.”

The owner has been charged with one count of having an unlicenced animal and one count of a dog attacking a person.

They have chosen to surrender the dog to the custody of authorities. The animal will be quarantined for 11 days.

The owner will be required to appear in court and could face a fine of up to $10,000.

ABS officials are continuing to investigate the incident.
