A 23-year-old man faces charges of Dangerous Driving and Flight from a Police Officer following a Thursday afternoon traffic stop on the Trans-Canada Highway.

According to members of the Bow Valley Integrated Traffic Unit, an eastbound motorcycle was travelling at a high rate of speed in Banff National Park at approximately 2:30 p.m. when an RCMP member attempted to stop the bike. The motorcyclist did not comply and sped away at a registered speed of 246 km/h (152 mph), well above the posted speed limit of 90 km/h.

Two RCMP members, stationed at a location further east along the highway, attempted to flag the motorcyclist to stop but the operator refused. Officers did not pursue the bike in an attempt to minimize the potential risk to the general public.

The Canmore and Cochrane RCMP detachments were notified of the speeding bike. When the motorcyclist entered Canmore, approximately 15 minutes later, the emergency lights on an RCMP unit were activated. The motorcyclist stopped his bike.

The operator, a 23-year-old from Calgary, was arrested and charged.

The unidentified man is scheduled to appear in Criminal Court in Canmore on June 17 to face charges of Dangerous Driving and Flight from a Police Officer.
