Residents from all over the City of Calgary converged just outside City Hall on Thursday night in support of Israel, where fighting has been continuing for several weeks.

The ‘Calgary for Israel’ rally drew close to 1,000 people, which surprised many of the attendees, who didn’t expect there to be so many people there.

Ezra Levant, who organized the rally, says he is also planning a fundraising campaign to help fund Israel’s Iron Dome Defence System.

The rally was peaceful, however contentious. Two weeks ago, pro-Israeli supporters showed up at a pro-Palestinian rally, and violence soon broke out.

The police needed to be called.

On Friday night, another group of Calgarians will be holding a prayer vigil for the Palestinians killed in the fighting.

Organizers say only Canadian and Palestinian flags will be welcome.

In the most recent news from Gaza, a Palestinian official says Israeli tank shelling has killed at least 27 Palestinians in the southern part of the region.

Israeli military officials say militants in Gaza fired rockets and mortars into Israeli territory.

The violence took place just hours after a three-day cease fire had been called.
