One man is now in hospital after the rural home he lives in north of Calgary caught fire early Friday morning.

Fire crews were called to the scene of the fire at a home on Township Road 263 and Range Road 293, just north of CrossIron Mills mall at about 12:30 a.m.

They, along with crews called in from Crossfield, managed to knock down the blaze quickly.

A 38-year-old man who lives in the home was awoken by the smoke alarm and got out safely, but needed to be taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Officials say they were particularly lucky with this fire as sometimes these sorts of incidents on rural properties can be very difficult to manage.

“We’re lucky this is a long panhandle drive and we had a water supply nearby. So we do have a short distance where our water tenders can get water and bring us water. We do have more challenging areas of Rockyview County, but today we were very lucky,” said Monty Armstrong with the Rockyview County Fire Department.

The home sustained heavy smoke and water damage.

Investigators are still trying to figure out the cause of the fire.
