After recent changes to school bus stops have resulted in some students needing to walk for several kilometres to catch their bus, concerned Calgary parents have started a petition to roll back the changes.

The Calgary Association of Parents and School Councils are urging parents to voice their concerned with the Calgary Board of Education over the controversial changes.

This September, the CBE eliminated a number of bus stops that’s resulted in parents needing to drive their children to school rather than make them walk for kilometres to their new stop.

Middle school students have also been told to take Calgary Transit buses to get to school.

According to the CBE, they will only review a stop if there is a safety concern, not for distance between stops.

“We can’t offer door-to-door service, so we are offering congregated stops, because if we did offer door-to-door service, the cost of that would be astronomical,” CBE Chair Joy Bowen-Eyre said on Tuesday.

The CBE says the congregated stops actually save money for parents, equaling to about $30 per child.
