Emergency crews were called to a crash in the northwest on Monday morning that killed one person and shut down roads in the area for several hours.

A vehicle and motorcycle collided around 11:30 a.m. in the 4200 block of 4th Street N.W.

The 55-year-old man on a 2000 Harley Davidson motorcycle was killed in the crash.

The other driver, a woman in her 60s, was the only occupant in the vehicle and was assessed at the scene by EMS.

“Single occupant, male rider of the motorcycle, a man believed to be in his 50s, was deceased as a result of injuries he sustained in the collision. EMS remained on scene to assess the female driver of the car who was physically unharmed and did not require hospital transport, ” said Stuart Brideaux, from Calgary EMS.

“What we know right now is that we had an adult male cyclist, a motorbiker, coming northbound on 4th Street. As he was coming northbound, a lady, a lone vehicle, in a Honda Civic, made a left turn across his path and the bike struck the Honda and as a result of the collision, the biker was pronounced dead at the scene,” said CPS S/Sgt Paul Stacey.

Police say the motorcyclist applied the brakes, locking the front wheel, and the bike and rider hit the vehicle.

The man on the bike was pronounced dead at the scene from fatal head injuries.

The area where the crash happened is on a bit of a hill and police say they are looking at all the factors.

“The point of perception for the driver and the possible point of perception are all things that we look at when we reconstruct the collision so as we do that we will be checking out exactly when she might have been able to first see the bike and when was the first possible time that she could see it. We’ll figure out all that stuff and we’ll also figure out what the speeds were. We don’t believe for sure that speed was involved on the part of the female that made the left turn, we’re not 100 percent yet on the biker, but that’s something we’ll determine through the course of the investigation,” said Stacey.

Police say they don't believe alcohol or speed were factors in the fatal crash.

"What we generally will do is we'll finish the investigation and once we have all the facts, then we'll determine whether charges are appropriate or not and if they are appropriate, which charges are appropriate," said S/Sgt Stacey.

The area was closed to traffic while police investigated.
