Officials with Animal & Bylaw Services are investigating three isolated dog attacks which occurred in Calgary within the last five days.

On Saturday afternoon, a 70-year-old woman was cycling in the northwest community of Montgomery when she stopped to talk to a neighbor. The woman was approached by an unsupervised pit bull which bit her hand. As a result of the bite, the woman suffered several broken bones.

An investigation by Animal & Bylaw Services members determined the dog had chased and threatened another person earlier the same day.

The dog was seized and its owner faces charges of:

  • Unlicensed Dog
  • Dog Attacking a Person
  • Dog Attacking a Person Causing Severe Injury
  • Dog at Large
  • Dog Chasing or Threatening a Person

The owner will be required to appear in court and may face fines of up to $10,000. The unidentified owner may choose to sign the dog over to the City of Calgary or allow a Provincial Court Judge to rule on the dog’s fate.

Unrelated to the Montgomery dog bite, on Monday afternoon, a Canada Post employee was delivering mail to an address on Assiniboine Rd. S.E. when a boxer bit the carrier’s hand. The postal worker required several stitches to close the wound.

Bylaw Services members believe the dog’s owners were out of town at the time of the attack and the dog was in the care of others. An investigation into the bite is underway and charges are pending against the owners.

Also on Monday afternoon, a cyclist was attempting to ride past a woman walking seven or eight dogs in a park near the intersection of 50 Ave. and 14A St. S.W. when one of the dogs bit him on the calf.

The dog walker left the scene without exchanging her information with the cyclist.

The woman is described as being heavy-set with sandy blond hair. The offending dog was believed to be a large, black and tan short hair cross-breed, weighing roughly 14 kg (30 lbs)

Anyone who witnessed the dog bite is asked to call 311.
