Calgary-based TransCanada Corp. is expected to formally file its application for a pipeline that would allow Alberta crude to flow to export terminals as far away as Quebec and New Brunswick.

The $12B project, which would span six provinces and 4,600 km, is one of the largest infrastructure projects ever built in the country.

The company says pipeline has already been built for two-thirds of the distance, with new pipeline to be built in Quebec and New Brunswick.

When completed, the project would enable shipment of Alberta oil to Europe, India, and other destinations.

The company says it will also help refineries in Eastern Canada, which rely on more expensive foreign crude to run.

TransCanada also says that it will create thousands of jobs for Canadians across the country.
