One person is in police custody in connection to Sunday's fatal afternoon shooting in the city's northeast.

According to EMS spokesperson Stuart Brideaux, at approximately 2:00 p.m., EMS crews responded to the 400 block of 26 Ave. N.E. following reports a person had been shot in the street.

An adult male suffering from a gunshot wound was located by officers and CPS members attempted CPR until EMS arrived. The shooting victim was transported by ambulance to Foothills Hospital.

Police confirm the victim succumbed to his injuries in hospital. The identity and age of the deceased have not been released.

Serge Varin was shocked to hear gunfire in his neighbourhood.

“I listened to five shots and I came out and everything was done,” said Varin.  “My wife was panicking as she heard the shots too.”

“I saw the blood on the guy on the ground because I went to the corner to see what happened. He was looking bad, I was sure he was dead. I don’t know if he’s dead or not but he went fast with the ambulance.”

After hearing the sound of gunshots, resident Maria Di Stefano investigated.

“I got up off the chesterfield and went to the window and this guy was running very fast,” recalls . “I said this is no good.”

Di Stefano says she saw a man with a white baseball cap, grey sweatpants and carrying a knapsack running eastbound on 26 Ave. N.E.

“I heard a cry and a scream and another one came out and said ‘that guy, that guy, just shot somebody’, but he was already three blocks away."

Police, including the HAWC helicopter, scoured the neighbourhood for the suspect. A man fitting the description of the offender was arrested in a field several blocks away. The suspect, a man in his twenties, remains in police custody.

Police have not confirmed how the suspect and victim were connected, but state there is no indication the shooting was random.

Anyone who witnessed the Winston Heights shooting or suspicious activity in the neighbourhood, is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service, 403-266-1234, or Crime Stoppers.
