Calgary's 7th Annual Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion event took place at the Eau Claire Market Sunday.
Local media and politicians were among the many people who showed up to raise funds and awareness of spinal cord injury.
The event had teams compete against one another in a wheelchair relay.
The purpose is to give people the chance to experience the obstacles people with spinal cord injuries face every day.
Organizer Vance Milligan says he believes this year's event will surpass their fundraising target.
"We told the Rick Hansen Foundation that we would raise $60,000 this year and I am convinced we are going to raise more that that. Calgary has responded well and I believe by the end of today, we will be substantially north of that."
A portion of the money raised last year went to installing a ceiling track at the Talisman Centre. The track makes it easier for people with spinal cord injuries to get in and out of the pools and hot tubs.
Since the inception of Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion in 2003, Canadians have raised over $9.6 million. These funds have supported more than 800 projects in communities across Canada, and have also been directed towards the search for a cure.
