Members of Alberta’s legislative assembly will be heading back to the province’s capital on Tuesday for the first day of a spring session that many believe will preceed a general election.

Jim Prentice says the session will be focusing on the budget, set to be tabled on March 26.

He also has said that his government will be releasing a plan to protect Alberta’s economy from swings in oil prices.

"It'll be more than just a budget. It'll be more of a 10 year plan of how we get through the circumstances we're in. So, we'll take it from there. It'll be introduced on the 26th of the month. The challenge is how do we protect our core services and at the same time deal with a big collapse of the government revenue which is oil prices."

Alberta’s opposition says they will also be bringing up surgical wait times, services for vulnerable children, and health care during the session.

All of the opposing parties say that Prentice will have to take responsibility for the comments he made last week, blaming Albertans for the province’s financial woes.

“We’re here to fight, to stand against tax increases, outline areas where we believe government must shrink spending, and improve front line services,” said Wildrose leader Heather Forsyth.

Prentice is scheduled to meet with public sector union leaders within the next ten days. Those leaders requested a meeting with the Premier before the budget was tabled.
