Members of the Calgary Police Service have apprehended one person following reports an armed man had been seen in a southwest park.

At around 3:30 p.m., CPS members including HAWCS responded to Stanley Park near the intersection of 40 Avenue and 1A Street Southwest following a call to 911 indicating a potential threat to the public.

“The initial call from the public was a very astute citizen that was giving man us updates,” said Acting Duty Inspector Phil Hoetger. “There was a male dressed in black holding what appeared to be a handgun and they were giving us regular updates as to where this person was.”

Police say a man carrying what appeared to be a handgun was spotted walking through the trees near a field where children were playing soccer.

“The park was very busy,” said Hoetger. “It was a sunny hot Sunday so the park was very busy with all sorts of people using it.”

Neighbourhood residents were asked to stay in their homes during the investigation and Stanley Park was evacuated.

“We used the helicopter which has a public address system to let members of the park know that there was a risky situation going on in the park at the time.”

According to police, the suspect refused to comply with police orders and a CPS member discharged their firearm during the confrontation.

The unidentified male was arrested in connection with the incident. Police continue to investigate the matter and there have been no reported injuries.

“We do have one person in custody and our officers will investigate the actions of the offender. ASIRT will investigate the actions of us, of the police officers involved.”

At approximately 5:30 p.m., the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) confirmed via Twiiter that the agency would be investigating a 'Calgary police officer-involved shooting, no injuries'.
