Expectant mothers in the Bow Valley will be delivering their babies in Canmore in the new year.

Banff Mineral Springs Hospital will no longer provide obstetrical services starting in March 2013.

Covenant Health, which runs the hospital, says about 50 babies are born at the Banff hospital each year compared to roughly 300 in Canmore.

A clinic for low risk births recently opened at the Canmore General Hospital and the facility will cover obstetrical services for the area.

The health care provider says concentrating services allows better care and more efficient use of resources.

"Canmore has a strong obstetrical program. They opened a low risk clinic in the fall of 2011. They have seven physicians who practice obstetrics and Banff unfortunately just has one at this time and our numbers have been reduced significantly over the last year," Cindy Mulherin from the Banff Mineral Springs Hospital.

While obstetrics are moving to Canmore, Covenant Health is moving their vascular and plastic surgery programs to Banff.
