The Calgary Stampede kicks off in just a few days and some bars in Calgary are looking to draw in more customers than ever before, as long as the province plays along.

Some bar owners are hoping to be able to start serving alcohol earlier in the day, similar to how it was during the Olympics when many bars opened early for the gold medal game in Sochi.

During that time, the province relaxed the rules around serving alcohol.

Currently, special functions that want to have the ability to serve alcohol, such as private breakfast functions, need to apply for special permission from the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission.

Bar owners say that serving alcohol earlier in the day doesn’t cause any problems.

Chris Joyce, who works with the National on 17 Avenue, said that when the rules were relaxed in February, everyone was responsible and respectful. “I think Calgarians in general are like that as well. They feel grateful if those liquor laws were relaxed. A lot of people just want to go out and have some beers.”

The AGLC says it’s planning to conduct a review of its liquor policies.

The rules were last updated in 2008.
