Rescuers with Parks Canada say they have recovered the body of a skier who fell into a crevasse on Mount Hector on Sunday.

The 32-year-old man was coming down from the peak with two companions when he fell into the crevasse at around 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Officials say he fell about 35 metres.

His companions, who were both well-experienced to climb down, did so and found the victim to be unresponsive.

They went for help and returned for him with Parks Canada rescue teams early Sunday evening.

They managed to get his body out of the crevasse, but had to wait until morning to remove the body from Mount Hector.

The body has now been transferred to the Medical Examiner.

Lake Louise RCMP says they have contacted the family of the skier.

His identity is not being revealed at this time.

Mount Hector is 3,394 metres in elevation and the accident occurred about 400 metres below the summit.

Officials say that crevasses are always a high concern when travelling on glaciers and urge everyone who does so to make sure they know how to do it safely.
