The City of Calgary has announced that they have appointed a new director to take over the city’s emergency response directives.

Tom Sampson, a 30 year veteran in the field of emergency services in Calgary, is taking on the role, moving up from the position of deputy chief within CEMA.

Sampson has also served as executive officer and deputy chief with the Calgary Fire Department, is a 22 year veteran of the Calgary EMS, with 11 of those years as chief of the department.

He played a pivotal role to help develop the Emergency Operations Centre in 2009.

Sampson holds a Masters certificate in Municipal Leadership from York University, is a licenced paramedic, and an Incident Command System instructor.

Sampson replaces ex-Fire Chief Bruce Burrell, who stepped down from his position last year.

On January 1, 2015, the city announced that CEMA would become a separate organization from the Calgary Fire Department.

Sampson will begin in his new role on March 2, 2015.
