Two years after they came to the country to escape an abusive relationship, a mother and her daughter are being forced to leave Calgary and return to their home country on Monday.
Ariunaa Demberel and her daughter Enky Ankhbayar came to Canada back in 2014 to escape from an abusive ex-husband.
Demberel says he kidnapped and assaulted them before they made the decision to flee Mongolia, their home country.
The pair applied for refugee status in hopes of staying here, but a judge ruled over the weekend that they would have to leave.
The judge ruled that deporting the women would not result in any 'irreparable harm' to either of them. There was also no risk of psychological trauma.
Demberel says she attempted to appeal to a federal court to put their deportation on hold, so Enky could finish her final year of high school in Canada, but that was not to be.
Donn Lovett has been helping the pair in their fight for the past few weeks and says that the deportation order is unjust and confusing.
"We took Ariunaa and her daughter Enka to Kent Hehr's office to see if we could handle the immigration file and just delay it. There is no reason to rush these women out given that Enka is in school, she is one of the top students at Western Canada High School. Her mother is working three jobs, she's volunteering at the Food Bank, which gave to her when she first arrived. They are not taking from us as a country. These are not the people we should be sending away. These are the people who will be contributing to our country."
Lovett says he will be working tirelessly to bring them back to the country.
Demberel and her daughter boarded the flight back to Mongolia on Monday morning.
She told CTV Calgary on Sunday that she has no plans for the future and doesn't know where to turn now.
Her daughter hopes that they will be safe back in their home country, if nothing else.
“I hope that God has plans for us, that he will help us survive there,” said Enky Ankhbayar. “Every joy I have in my life is in Canada, so I really can’t go back, so I still hope that everything is going to be alright and I will go to school and graduate, you know, it’s all I want because I don’t see any future back there.”
