The Canadian Wilds section of the Calgary Zoo has two new residents following the birth of otter pups, the zoo’s first successful otter litter.

Charlotte, the zoo’s 10-year-old female river otter, gave birth to the pups on March 18, 2014.

The two-week-old otters have yet to open their eyes and zoo officials have not determined the gender of the pups.

“The pups are thriving and we have observed them nursing,” said Jamie Dorgan, General Curator of the Calgary Zoo. “Charlotte is doing everything that a new mom should.”

Charlotte and her pups live in the den in the zoo’s river otter enclosure in the Cequel Lodge and are expected to remain in the den for the next month. Zoo guests are asked to remain quiet and respectful of the otters during their visit to the building
