Crews from the City of Calgary are dealing with a large sinkhole that has appeared in a northwest road.

At around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, crews were called to Northmount Drive and 40 Avenue N.W. after one driver reported a sinkhole had appeared in the southbound lanes.

Garth Joertz was on his way to work at the Foothills Hospital when he saw cars swerving into oncoming traffic.

He didn't know what was going on, so swerved towards the curb instead.

That's when he drove right into the sinkhole.

"I was going fairly slowly, so it was a slow descent into the hole, but I guess there was enough movement with the car that I came out right away. The front tire was blown and whatever other damage was already done," Joertz says.

Joertz says that his car sustained serious damage to the undercarriage and engine.

City crews are now investigating the cause of the sink hole and are working to fill it in.

Neighbours say when they first saw it following the crash, the hole was empty but it has since been filling up with water throughout the morning.

Drivers are being detoured around the damaged road.

Repairs are expected to take at least 24 hours.
