Drivers who use McKnight Boulevard to get to work should try to find a detour because of a big construction delay soon to cause lane and speed reductions on the bridge over Deerfoot Trail.
Beginning August 2, workers will be on the bridge replacing deck joints and completing other work on the road. Road restrictions will be in place starting August 4.
The city says the construction project has been designed to reduce as much impact on traffic in the area, but some disruption is to be expected.
Crews will be working days and nights, seven days a week, in order to minimize the amount of time the road will be disrupted.
Work is expected to be completed by the end of September.
Drivers in the area should be aware of the following when in the area:
- Speed will be reduced to 50 km/h on McKnight Boulevard
- Two WB lanes of McKnight Boulevard will remain open
- One EB lane will remain open for traffic approaching the bridge
- Lanes will be narrowed through the construction zone
- The ramp from SB Deerfoot Trail to EB McKnight Boulevard will join a second EB lane on McKnight Boulevard
Large trucks are prohibited on the SB Deerfoot Trail ramp to EB McKnight Boulevard and NB Deerfoot Trail to WB McKnight Boulevard during construction and should find alternate routes.
Drivers are also reminded that speeding fines are doubled in construction zones and should always obey flag persons, signs and signals when driving through those areas.
