Calgary’s skyline is already pretty spectacular but a number of new buildings are set to sprout up among the other glass and steel giants in the core.

GWL Realty Advisors will present its plan for the east tower of the First Canadian Centre to the planning commission for approval on Thursday.

The new tower is part of the second phase of the project and will compliment the west tower which was built in 1982.

The plan for the east tower originally called for a 64 storey office building but the new proposal has scaled that back to 28.

The new building will be at the northwest corner of 7 Ave. and 2 St. S.W. and will have 68,270 square metres of floor space.

The building will include retail space and a Plus-15 and if approved, will be completed by 2017.

The Corporate Planning Applications Group has already recommended that the Calgary Planning Commission approve the application for the tower.

The new tower is the latest in a number of office development projects in the city.

Brookfield Place promises to become the tallest structure in the west when it is complete at 247 metres and construction is scheduled to begin in September.

Construction is also underway on Telus Sky and several other office buildings in the downtown core.
