The trial of a couple accused in the overdose death of their baby continued at the Calgary Courts Centre on Monday.

Lisa Guerin and Jonathon Hope are charged with manslaughter in the death of their 16-month-old daughter Summer.

The child died after ingesting methadone, a drug used in drug addiction detoxification and maintenance programs.

A doctor in charge of methadone delivery at the Second Chance Recovery Clinic testified that Jonathon was a client at the downtown location between 2005 and 2007 to treat an addiction to painkillers.

Dr. Ian Postnikof said that in late 2005, Hope was allowed to take his methadone dose home in a locked box, but that privilege was revoked in 2006.

At the time of Summer's death, Hope was not allowed to take methadone home with him.

Hope told two officers he managed to take part of his dose home and that he believed the medication was out of his daughter's reach.
