It was an emotional sentencing hearing for a man who pleaded guilty to a hit and run that killed a woman and severely injured her disabled son.

Kevin Davey fought back tears as he described the loss of his wife and the injuries to his son.

Davey says Darren Coupal's cruel and thoughtless actions have changed everything.

In April 2008, a severely drunk Coupal drove into a group of people out for a walk in the southwest community of Bridlewood.

The crash killed Linda Davey, severely injured her 15-year-old son Joshua, and badly hurt a family friend.

Coupal drove away from the scene on flattened tires. Shocked witnesses followed him and alerted police.

Coupal pleaded guilty to numbers charges including impaired driving causing death.

Coupal read a statement in court apologizing and promising to be a better person.

"He doesn't drink anymore, he doesn't drive. There were a lot of character reference letters submitted as well that say a lot of things in that area as well," says Steve Wojick, the defense lawyer.

Coupal will be going to jail; the only question now is for how long.

The Crown is calling for a 10-year sentence. "I can't stress enough, drunk driving at the best of times if reprehensible but in those circumstances it calls for a sentence that tells people if you're close enough to home, stay away from the car," says Paul Mason.

Coupal's sentence is expected to be delivered in March.
