A Calgary judge has ruled the father of a baby girl who died of a methadone overdose should undergo a psychiatric review before he is sentenced.

Jonathon Hope and his wife, Lisa Guerin, were convicted earlier this month of failing to provide the necessities of life for their 16-month-old daughter, Summer.

She died in April 2006 after she drank the methadone her father was taking for a drug addiction.

Jonathan Hope tried for hours to revive his daughter -- including attaching electrical wires from a lamp to her chest -- instead of calling 911.

Justice Earl Wilson says his actions warrant an assessment of his mental state.

Lisa Guerin will be sentenced April 8th.
