Firefighters were able to quickly gain the upper hand on a fire at a southwest home on Friday morning and remain on the scene to monitor for hot spots.
Crews were called to a home at 27 Millbank Road S.W. at about 10:30 a.m.
When they arrived, they saw smoke pouring from the interior and say the resident of the home had made it out safely and called 911.
Officials say a fire in the fireplace extended into the attic and they had to pull down part of the ceiling and cut a hole in the roof to get at it.
"It looked like the fire was originating around the fireplace area of the home," said District Chief Bruce Gelhorn with the Calgary Fire Department. "There is significant damage to the home. The homeowners will not be back in the home tonight."
Homes on either side were evacuated as a precaution.
The fire department says that residents with heating appliances should take steps to properly maintain them and make sure they are in good working order as the temperature plunges.
"We recommend that people have their appliances checked by a certified technician at least once a year so that they're safe and operable for the cold weather," says Gelhorn.
No one was hurt in the fire and the cause is under investigation.
