The principal of a southeast high school has altered his position on who would be permitted to walk across the graduation stage following an outpouring of objections from students through social media and an online petition.
In a letter addressed to parents and guardians of Lord Beaverbrook High School students, Principal Jim Simpson stated all students of the school who meet Alberta Education guidelines for graduation and adhere to the school’s code of conduct, are invited to participate in this spring’s graduation ceremony.
School officials had implemented a policy which would deny any student who had failed a course from crossing the stage at graduation but, effective immediately, that decision has been reversed.
Simpson says the revision to the policy follows discussion with parents, students, and school staff.
