A 30-year-oldCalgary man who was convicted of killing his father will be sent to a hospital instead of a jail cell.

Ranjit Singh was found not criminally responsible for killing 60-year-old Harinder Singh in December of 2009.

The younger Singh killed his father with a heavy blow to the head.

During the trial two psychiatrists testified that Singh should be found not criminally responsible because he is schizophrenic.

Doctors say he has no memory of the killing and wasn't able to appreciate how serious the crime was.

Singh will be transferred to a psychiatric hospital in Edmonton.

It will be up to a review panel to determine when or if Singh can reside in the community again.
