The Calgary man accused of torturing a dog and cat earlier in 2014 appeared briefly in court to learn about the next steps in the proceedings against him.

Nicolino Camardi, 19, was arrested and charged in May with willfully causing unnecessary pain, suffering, or injury to an animal.

The Calgary Humane Society says the charges stem from an investigation that began in January when a dog was found starved to death, with tape wrapped around its muzzle.

A dead cat was found in a similar state in the same area a week later.

According to documents, Camardi has a history of mental illness and psychosis.

He has already undergone a 30 day psych assessment.

A judge set the case over until September 9, at which time a bail hearing will be held.
