The Calgary Fire Department says that Blackfoot Trail S.E. has been reopened after it was closed Wednesday afternoon when a number of rail cars went off the tracks.

A Canadian Pacific train had just pulled out of the Alyth Yard when it rounded a gentle bend along the border of Inglewood and Ramsay, and eight cars derailed, with seven of those tipping directly onto their sides.

Most of the cars were loaded with diluent, a hydrocarbon thinner used in oil pipelines.

The material is flammable and toxic, but it’s not considered explosive.

Responders and CP say that all of the tanks were not seriously damaged in the incident and no leaks were found.

As soon as the incident was reported, roadblocks went up and police worked to evacuate several businesses, homes, and everyone out of the Ogden Pool.

Traffic backups in the area persisted until about 8 p.m. as crews at the scene worked to clear everything up.

No one was injured in the derailment.

CP says they’re launching their own investigation into what caused the incident.

The Transportation Safety Board will also be investigating.

Everyone is back in their home safely and fire officials are continuing to assist with the clean up.

15 Street between 9 Ave. and Blackfoot Trail S.E. will remain closed until the scene is completely clear.
