A 32-year-old Calgary man, accused in a fatal May 2014 crash which claimed his female passenger, announced his plans to surrender to police on Wednesday afternoon.

In the early hours of May 24, 2014, a 2002 BMW X5, driven by Varden Hovakimyan, was travelling along the Trans-Canada Highway when the vehicle left the highway and rolled, ejecting Hovakimyan and 25-year-old Robyn Hauck.

Hauck, a resident of Leduc, was pronounced dead at the scene. Hovakimyan was transported to the Foothills Hospital in serious, life threatening condition. The accused was not arrested in hospital following the crash as RCMP members had not determined if Hovakimyan's actions warranted criminal charges or charges under the Traffic Safety Act.

RCMP had laid charges of Careless Driving against Hovakimyan, but the accused remained at large. Following the issuing of an arrest warrant, Hovakimyan contacted the Lake Louise RCMP detachment shortly after 4:00 p.m. Wednesday stating 'I hear you guys are looking for me'. The call was placed from the Salvation Army - Centre of Hope.

According to Sgt. Jeff Campbell, Hovakimyan was not considered a danger to the public and the accused is aware of the events of May 24 and the charge he faces.

Hovakimyan is expected to surrender to the Calgary Police Service.
