A 12-year-old girl has died after she crashed while skiing at Panorama Mountain Village in B.C. on Thursday morning.

Officials at Panorama say the girl was skiing with her father on Millennium at about 10:50 a.m. when she lost control, veered off a run, and struck a tree on the side of the trail.

A number of other skiers jumped in to help out and Ski Patrol at the resort initiated CPR.

The girl was airlifted to hospital in Invermere and later died from head and internal injuries.

Officials say the trail was soft and groomed and visibility was clear at the time.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family. This is a tragic accident and we are doing everything we can to assist the family during this trying time,” said CEO and President of Panorama Mountain Village, Steve Paccagnan. “We are all deeply saddened by this event and I want to thank the entire Emergency Response Team for their quick response and professionalism. They did all they could to save this little girl.”

The girl was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and her name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
