An Okotoks teen is dead following a Thursday morning crash on Highway 2A at an intersection near the Cargill Foods plant.

At approximately 7:00 a.m., RCMP responded to the scene of a two-vehicle crash.

According to RCMP, a southbound Chevy Blazer was stopped at an intersection while waiting to make a left hand turn into the Cargill facility. A Honda Civic, also travelling southbound, struck the Blazer on the passenger side in the rear quarter panel.

The driver of the Civic, 19-year-old Jonathon Martin Hamm of Okotoks, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Blazer driver suffered non-life threatening injuries and received medical treatment by EMS.

An RCMP investigation determined the driver of the Blazer had applied the vehicle’s turn signal prior to the crash. According to witnesses, the Civic was seen drifting between the two southbound lanes.

Distracted driving on the part of the Civic driver has not been ruled out as a contributing factor to the fatal crash.

Highway 2A was closed for approximately 45 minutes following the collision.
