Calgary firefighers have gained control of a huge grass fire near Sarcee Trail and 16th Avenue that threatened homes on Bowdale Crescent in the city's northwest.

People living in homes near the fire were evacuated just after 1:00 p.m. Friday becuase the flames were getting close to their properties.

Some were using garden hoses to wet down thier homes in an attempt to keep the flames away.

It is believed that several fires started along the railroad tracks between Sarcee Trail and Edworthy Park.

The fire caused a lot of smoke in the area and northbound Sarcee Trail was shut down while crews worked to control the flames.

One lane was reopened to traffic just after 4:00 p.m. but officials are still asking motorists to avoid the area.

People and their pets were asked to vacate the off-leash area and parking lot near the blaze.

Sustainable Resource Development provided air support to Calgary firefighters and were making water drops on the area.

Rockyview Fire also assisted to control the fire and police took care of evacuating residents.

Three pets were also evacuated and are in the care of Animal Bylaw Services.

The Calgary Fire Department gained control of the blaze at about 4:00 p.m. and there is no word yet on a cause.
