Construction on the southwest leg of the LRT continues as the tracks creep further up 17 Avenue and on Thursday an empty school was being prepared for demolition.

Crews began to dismantle the old Ernest Manning High School near Westbrook Mall.

The school, on 17th Ave S.W., was built in 1963 and was shut down to make way for the LRT.

The empty school has been hit by vandals several times and many of the windows have been smashed out.

On Thursday, crews began tearing the roof off and are preparing to bring the structure down.

The old school was replaced by a new, state-of-the-art facility, with the same name, on 69th street in the southwest.

The new Ernest Manning High School opened in September 2011 and is the first public school in Calgary with an artificial turf athletic field.
