Emergency crews were called to a fire in an industrial area in the city’s southeast on Tuesday afternoon and say it is the second fire in the last two months at the business.

Fire crews were called out a blaze at IKO Industries, a roofing tile manufacturing company, in the 1600 block of 42 Avenue S.E. at about 1:00 p.m.

Heavy, black smoke and flames were shooting out of a large container used to store asphalt when crews arrived.

Fire officials evacuated 12 people from a nearby fibreboard business.

A hazardous materials crew was called in because of the chemicals involved in making the roofing products.

"There are several types of chemicals and materials involved in the manufacture of roofing products and our hazardous materials crew is currently on site working with incident command to figure out what the best way is to mitigate those risks," said Carol Henke from the Calgary Fire Department.

It is the second fire at the business in the last two months but officials say this fire is smaller than the last.

On March 11, fire crews were called to a three-alarm fire at the business, which heavily damaged part of the builidng.

Occupational Health and Safety investigators met with company officials the day after that fire and the cause was believed to be accidental.

A contracting crew is believed to have started the fire while dismantling a piece of equipment with a cutting torch.

Fire officials say the fire is now under control and there are no issues with air quality.

No injuries were reported.
