Investigators with the Calgary Fire Department are now working to figure out what happened when a southeast home burst into flame on Wednesday night.

At about 8:15 p.m., the residents of a fourplex on 48 Street S.E. in Forest Lawn were forced to get out of the building when they heard an explosion.

Most of the occupants managed to get out of the building quickly, but one man was trapped inside for a period of time.

Crews say the man did manage to free himself.

“We did have one suite heavily damaged by fire,” said Battalion Chief Ernie Molineaux. “There was one occupant home at the time of the fire and from what I understand; he did escape on his own through a window. We do understand he sustained some injuries and was transported to hospital.”

The man is listed in non-life-threatening condition.

The Canadian Red Cross was called to help one of the families displaced by the fire. The organization is helping the two adults and two children affected by the fire with emergency food, hygiene kits, clothing, and accomodation for 72 hours.

The fire is under investigation.
