A former Calgary Police officer is facing charges of sexual assault and child pornography following a year-long investigation.

The investigation, conducted by the CPS Domestic Conflict Unit with the support of other units such as Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team – Internet Child Exploitation Unit, began in January 2012 after a woman in her 50s said she was being harassed by her ex-boyfriend.

She also claimed that she was sexually assaulted by the suspect while in the relationship.

Police, during their investigation, soon found that he was also accessing images of child pornography.

On Friday, January 11, 2013, Stephen Huggett, 58, was arrested at his home in Willow Park.

He has been charged with:

  • sexual assault with a firearm
  • extortion
  • criminal harassment
  • possession of child pornography

Huggett is a former 25-year veteran of the force, jailed three years ago for the possession of child pornography.

He pleaded guilty to those charges, but said they were part of an investigation.

He received a nine month sentence in 2008.

Further details about these new charges are limited as the case remains before the courts.
