Six people were sent to hospital after two pickup trucks crashed head-on on the highway near Bowden on Sunday afternoon.

RCMP responded to the crash at about 4:40 p.m. on Highway 587, about a kilometre west of Highway 2.

Police say it appears that a westbound Ford F150 truck crossed into the eastbound lane and into the path of a Dodge Ram truck.

The Ram tried to avoid the F150, as it came back across the highway, and the two collided in the westbound lane. The crash caused the Ram to roll onto its roof in the ditch.

STARS transported the drivers of both vehicles in serious, potentially life threatening condition to trauma centres in Calgary and Edmonton.

One passenger in the F150 and three in the Ram were taken to hospitals in Calgary and Red Deer by ground ambulance.

Police continue to investigate and are looking into whether alcohol and speed were factors in the crash.
