A Calgary man has been charged in connection to an alleged land-development investment scheme.

The charges come after a year-long investigation into Canadian Properties Corporation.

The scheme began in the summer of 2007.

Investigators say the company marketed, to potential investors, a parcel of land near Camrose. The advertisements were under the heading Lake Lot Properties in Camrose County.

The accused and his alleged associate took minor steps to develop the land but investigators say they did not have the authority because the land did not belong to them.

Police learned about the alleged scheme when three athletes, in Calgary to train for the Olympics, contacted them.

Investigators say there were at least 10 victims who were each defrauded between $25,000 and $105,000.

None of the money has been recovered.

Robert Gordon Daignault, 42, of Calgary is charged with theft and fraud.

Police say the investigation is on going so anyone with information that could help is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
