A Medicine Hat man is now being charged with second degree murder in the death of 23-year-old Amy Lewis, whose body has not yet been found.
34-year-old Jerrison Stopanski was originally charged with being an accessory after the fact.
Lewis hasn’t been seen since June 11.
Three days later, police found her car in the parking lot of a Medicine Hat hotel.
According to DNA evidence, police have upgraded the charges and are now charging Stopanski with second degree murder.
Inspector Glen Motz says that the case presents them with a set of unique challenges. “I know that we are confident as well as the Crown with respect to the evidence we have gathered to support this charge. We have no significant evidence right now as we stand today that would bring any clearer direction or location to where her whereabouts are.”
Police aren’t saying what type of DNA evidence they have or where they found it.
They are also not revealing whether or not anyone else is involved.
Stopanski remains in police custody and is expected back in court on July 26.
