A Calgary woman is asking for the driver who injured her nine-year-old daughter and 11-year-old son to come forward and accept the consequences of their actions.

At roughly 7:30 a.m. Friday, Amber Chinery’s three children, her 11-year-old son and her nine-year-old twins, a girl and a boy, were attempting to cross Bermondsey Way Northwest, near Berkley Drive, when two of the children were struck by a pickup truck. The driver of the truck, believed to be a white Dodge Ram with a ladder in the bed, fled the scene after the collision.

The Beddington Heights hit-and-run left the nine-year-old girl suffering from a broken femur while her 11-year-old brother received a number of serious internal injuries.

“They’re worried that (he) is going to have to undergo surgery one more time to repair a broken collarbone, scapula,” said Chinery while addressing the media outside of the Alberta Children’s Hospital on Saturday. “He’s got spinal injuries, an injury to his right lung and, of course, bruises and road rash all over his body.”

Chinery says her daughter remains hospitalized in a full body cast after her broken leg was reset without the use of pain medication.

"They’re very strong. I don’t know necessarily if it’s hit them fully as to what happened,” said Chinery. “Their other brother who was not hit and who witnessed everything is unfortunately suffering the most trauma at this time.”

“He feels guilt for not being able to push them out of the way."

Chinery says she had planned to accompany her children to school on Friday but was told ‘Mom, we are not babies anymore. You have told us how to cross the road and we know how to cross the road’.

Beddington Heights residents have expressed their concerns with the safety of the intersection of Berkley Drive and Bermondsey Way and Friday’s collision was not the first time a child had been struck by a vehicle in their community. In the past, the neighbourhood has petitioned the city to install a traffic light

In 2011, the City of Calgary conducted a traffic study of the intersection and determined a traffic signal was not necessary.

“People fly down Berkley Drive,” said Chinery. “I’ve seen many close calls. I’ve seen children be pushed out of the road to avoid being hit.”

Chinery says she could have potentially forgiven the driver had he stayed at the scene following the collision.

”The fact that you ran over their bodies as they laid in the middle of the road and drove away, I could not forgive that,” said Chinery. “You owe it to my children to come forward and be accountable for what you’ve done.”

Anyone with information about the collision, the current location of the pickup truck, or the identity of the driver, is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service, 403-266-1234, or Crime Stoppers.
