Two of the candidates for leadership of the Alberta PC Party are calling for a televised debate which will be open to the public ahead of the vote to take place next month.

Thomas Lukaszuk and Ric McIver have both called on their party to support such an action.

They say they will be releasing a joint letter they passed on to the party at the Alberta Legislature on Monday morning.

In a release, McIver says that Albertans need to know about their new leader. "Make no mistake," he says. "I believe the party has been doing great work engaging members and raising awareness; however, this leadership race will elect the next Premier of Alberta."

Lukaszuk says that the PCs need to reach out to earn the respect of Albertans. "An open forum allows people to ask questions on the topics important to them, and a debate format allows journalists and candidates to respond to the ideas their colleagues bring forward."

Party members will head to the polls to vote for a new leader in September. The first ballot will take place on the 5 and 6 while a second ballot, if needed, will take place on September 20.
