Calgary police have charged two people with conspiracy to commit murder and believe the intended target was a friend of an ex-partner of one of the accused.

Police arrested two people at a McDonald's Restaurant in the northeast on Thursday and say the charges stem from an alleged kidnapping attempt back in May.

Investigators say that there was an imminent threat to the safety of another individual after that incident and they believe that the intended target of the murder plot was an associate of an ex-domestic partner of one of the accused.

“It was concerning enough for our investigators that had been following this file that they felt it was necessary to take this person into immediate custody and that’s what happened yesterday,” said Brookwell.

Brookwell says officers followed the accused and waited until it was safe to take them into custody.

Vincenzo Sirianni, 43, and Tammy Earl, 40, are each charged with one count of conspiring to commit murder.

Brookwell says there are two victims in this case.

“The victim from the May incident and the victim from the investigation that resulted in the arrest yesterday are two different people,” said Brookwell.

Police say they don't see charges like this very often.

“To lay that charge there had to have been some fairly significant investigative work that we could present to The Crown to basically articulate that these plans were in place,” said Brookwell.

Police say Sirianni and Earl are associates and are not in a domestic relationship.

They are not releasing further details as the matter is now before the courts.
