A retired Calgary police officer has pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography.

Steve Huggett was in court on Monday to enter his plea.

In the Statement of Facts, Huggett admitted to viewing and downloading child porn while he was still a member of the Calgary Police Service.

Last April, the 54-year-old was charged after a witness discovered the images on Huggett's computer and went to police.

At the time of the arrest, Huggett had 64 videos and 20 images depicting child pornography.

Some of the movies and images were of children, as young as the age of one, being sexually assaulted by men. Other images were of young girls blindfolded, naked and tied up.

Huggett told an investigator "he knew the images were illegal and that he should not have been downloading them and that he found them grotesque."

Huggett is facing a maximum penalty of five years in prison. The minimum sentence would be 45 days in jail.

Huggett will be back in court on June 12th.
