The man who pleaded guilty in connection with a sexual assault that left a 25-year-old woman hospitalized for weeks will have to wait until March to learn his sentence.

Earlier this year, Denzel Dre Colton Bird entered guilty pleas on charges of aggravated sexual assault and break-and-enter after he attacked a 25-year-old woman with a weapon, dragged her into an alleyway and sexually assaulted her near 6 Avenue South in Lethbridge in September of 2016. Bird was originally charged with attempted murder, aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon, aggravated assault and break and enter in the incident.

The victim spent several weeks in hospital in Calgary in a medically-induced coma. She continues her slow recovery from her injuries outside of hospital and has had to relearn how to walk and talk.

According to Bird’s lawyer, his client remains on a waiting list for a forensic psychiatric assessment and a Gladue Principle report, a review that considers the accused’s background as an Indigenous Canadian.

Bird’s sentencing has been rescheduled from January 5, 2018 to March 28, 2018.
